What Is Latisse Treatment?

Latisse® (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) is the first FDA-approved prescription treatment for hypotrichosis (inadequate or not enough eyelashes) and can effectively increase the length, thickness, and darkness of eyelashes.

Like the hair on one’s head, eyelashes sprout, grow for a while, and eventually fall out. Latisse both extends the growth phase and increases the number of hairs that sprout. During clinical studies, improvement is seen within 4-6 weeks, and full results appear after 12-16 weeks of daily use. Eyelash length can increase by as much as 25 percent; thickness and fullness by as much as 100 percent; and darkness by as much as 18 percent.

What to Expect on the Day of Latisse Treatment

Latisse is applied by dabbing it along the upper lash line each night using the sterile applicators provided. The drug spreads to the lower lash line automatically as a person blinks. It should never be applied in the eye or onto the lower lid.

According to clinical studies conducted before FDA approval, Latisse is safe for most patients, with the exception of those with eye problems such as uveitis and conjunctivitis, a risk of macular edema, severe allergies, or skin infections of the upper eyelids. It should also not be used by pregnant or nursing women.
