What Are BOTOX & Wrinkle Relaxers?

BOTOX, or botulinum toxin, is a neuromodulator that has gained significant recognition. Unlike fillers that add volume to skin depressions, neuromodulators temporarily block nerve signals to the muscles, inhibiting muscle contraction. Dr. Moradzadeh specializes in applying this treatment in a way that considers each patient’s unique anatomical structure and skin condition.

BOTOX® (Botulinum toxin) is currently the most popular non-surgical cosmetic medical procedure in the U.S. and has revolutionized the industry. Used for years in ophthalmology to treat spastic eyelid disorders, it is now widely administered as a safe, effective, and cost-effective treatment for frown lines, crow’s feet, wrinkles, and facial reshaping.

Other wrinkle relaxers/neuromodulators offered by our practice include the following:

Dysport is an FDA-approved alternative to BOTOX. Developed in the United Kingdom in the 1990s, it is now used throughout the world. Like BOTOX, Dysport is a Botulinum toxin, and they have similar treatment effects. Both are FDA-approved and offer safe and effective options for treating age lines on the face and neck, including crow’s feet, eye wrinkles, horizontal forehead lines, neckbands, bunny lines, and chin dimpling.

BOTOX and Dysport are injected into the facial muscles in the same manner. Some patients notice that Dysport starts working within a day or two, whereas BOTOX can take up to a week to show results. Other patients do not notice a significant difference in how quickly the products work. Side effects after treatment are similar and may include soreness at the injection sites or a mild headache.

How Does BOTOX Work?

  • When you choose a BOTOX treatment with us, small doses of the neuromodulator are precisely injected into the targeted muscles. BOTOX then blocks nerve signals to the muscles where it has been injected, reducing muscle activity. This decrease in activity lessens the appearance of wrinkles and results in a smoother skin surface.

What Are the Treatment Areas for BOTOX?

  • BOTOX isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution; it’s adaptable to various treatment areas. The three FDA-approved areas for BOTOX injections are the crow’s feet (lines around the eyes), forehead lines, and glabellar lines (lines between the eyebrows). In addition to these, we frequently offer BOTOX treatments for brow lifts. While brow lifts are not FDA-approved, they are a commonly requested service at our practice. With it, we can elevate and shape the eyebrows for a fresher look. BOTOX can also be used to help alleviate migraine headaches through injection in key areas of the neck and face.

BOTOX provides a convincing alternative to surgical procedures, such as facelifts. While BOTOX cannot provide the same drastic change to the face as a facelift, it offers a minimally invasive way to smooth wrinkles and maintain a youthful appearance without the need for or cost of traditional surgical procedures.

Is BOTOX Right for You?

  • BOTOX works best on wrinkles that are not deeply set into the skin. This can vary with age, sun exposure, and genetic factors. But BOTOX can also be used as a preventative treatment to help protect the skin from forming signs of aging. Many people start treatment in their 20s or 30s, though it can begin at any age.

While BOTOX injections have proven effective at eliminating unwanted facial lines, such as wrinkles caused by aging, it’s important to remember that this is not a permanent solution and requires repeated treatments. It is not an option for women who are pregnant and nursing or for patients with neuromuscular disorders such as Myasthenia Gravis.

After a thorough consultation and exam, Dr. Moradzadeh can help those of you in Los Angeles decide if BOTOX makes sense for you based on the results you’re trying to achieve.

Not everyone is a suitable candidate for BOTOX treatment. Factors such as age, medical history, and specific cosmetic goals will be discussed with you during your consultation. This helps ensure that BOTOX is an appropriate option for your aesthetic needs. Those who are not candidates for BOTOX injections include:

  • Allergy to any ingredients found in BOTOX, such as eggs
  • Severe infection or illness, such as diabetes or ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)
  • History of seizures
  • Very thick skin or deep facial scars
  • Eyelid drooping (ptosis) or other weakness
  • Taking certain medications, such as blood thinners
  • Pregnancy orbreastfeeding

What Are the Benefits of Choosing BOTOX?

  • Minimally Invasive: One significant benefit of choosing a BOTOX treatment is its minimally invasive nature. Unlike surgical procedures that may require extended recovery periods, BOTOX can be administered in a quick office visit. Injections are as comfortable as possible, allowing you to get back to your day without prolonged interruption.
  • Customizable and Versatile: BOTOX is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Each injection plan is tailored to your specific needs and problem areas. The versatility of BOTOX makes it a suitable option for a variety of treatment areas and aesthetic preferences and goals. We take the time to discuss your treatment goals to ensure they align with the treatment strategy.
  • Long-Lasting: After receiving your BOTOX injections, you can expect the BOTOX results to last for several months, usually between three and four months. However, the effects are not permanent, giving you the flexibility to adjust your treatment plan as your needs and goals evolve.
  • No Downtime Required: When you opt for BOTOX injections with us, there is typically no downtime after treatment. Most patients can resume their usual activities almost immediately. This benefit makes BOTOX an increasingly convenient choice for those who don’t have much time to devote to themselves, without compromising a refreshed appearance.
  • Increase Confidence: BOTOX is a premium choice to enhance your natural beauty by softening wrinkles and fine lines. Your youthful appearance will increase your confidence and self-esteem without removing expression from your face.
  • Can Pair With Other Treatments: BOTOX can be effectively paired with other cosmetic treatments, including dermal fillers, chemical peels, and microneedling. This enables holistic facial rejuvenation by targeting multiple problem areas, such as reducing wrinkles and improving skin texture.

What’s the First Step?

You are going to begin with a detailed consultation with Dr. Arash Moradzadeh or a highly trained member of his aesthetic team. This initial visit for those in the Los Angeles area is designed to be both educational and collaborative, allowing ample time to discuss your concerns, goals, and expectations in detail. Rather than applying a standardized injection pattern, Dr. Moradzadeh carefully evaluates your facial anatomy, muscle movement, skin quality, and natural expressions to determine the most effective and balanced treatment approach.

During your consultation, your medical history, current medications, and any prior injectable treatments will be reviewed to ensure both safety and optimal outcomes. Dr. Moradzadeh will also explain how neuromodulators such as BOTOX, Dysport, and Xeomin work, which product may be best suited for you, and what level of movement or smoothness you can realistically expect.

What to Expect During BOTOX Treatment

When you visit Dr. Moradzadeh in the Los Angeles area, your initial consultation will be a comprehensive assessment of your aesthetic goals and the appropriate injection sites. The procedure typically lasts 15-20 minutes, depending on the areas being treated. We use fine needles to minimize discomfort, and most clients describe their BOTOX injections as a slight pinch.

BOTOX is injected into the tissue and temporarily weakens the muscles that create facial wrinkles or lines. It takes the BOTOX molecule approximately three to five days to begin working, and it may take 10 days to reach its full effect. As a result, Dr. Moradzadeh will schedule a two-week follow-up appointment to assess whether the treatment is working as expected. Usually, the effects of BOTOX injection can last from three to four months, but results vary among individuals.

One week prior to treatment, it is best to avoid any products containing aspirin or other medications that can affect the blood, including Motrin, Aleve, Ibuprofen, Naprosyn, and Vitamin E supplements. The main concern with taking these medications is that they can lead to bruising following the injection.

What to Expect After BOTOX Treatment

After your treatment, common side effects are mild and improve in a day or two. These include pain, swelling, redness, or bruising at the treatment site, as well as headache. Talk with Dr. Moradzadeh and his team if you have concerns. To care for your skin and achieve optimal results, it is important to follow aftercare instructions. These include:

  • Avoid touching or massaging the treated area, as this can displace the BOTOX from its intended location. Touching can also increase the risk of infection and bruising.
  • Avoid strenuous activities and workouts. Intense physical exertion increases blood flow and circulation within the body. Typically, this is beneficial, but after BOTOX injections, it can cause the toxin to disperse before it has had time to work fully.
  • Avoid saunas, hot tubs, and hot baths, as heat can also increase blood flow.
  • Do not take medications that can thin the blood, such as ibuprofen.
  • Avoid lying down for an extended period immediately after the procedure.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 1 to 2 days after your treatment. The sun is a major cause of premature aging, so also make sure you apply SPF 30 on exposed areas.
